Stamps and Poetry

The other day at work we received a letter in the mail that had these really cool stamps of Edna St. Vincent Millay, the famous American poet. A couple days later when I went to see my grandmother I told her about the stamps and she prompted me to read some of Millay’s poetry out loud to her.

Here is one of her poems that I particularly liked.

“Travel” by: Edna St. Vincent Millay

The railroad track is miles away,
And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn’t a train goes by all day
But I hear its whistle shrieking.

All night there isn’t a train goes by,
Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
And hear its engine steaming.

My heart is warm with the friends I make,
And better friends I’ll not be knowing,
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
No matter where it’s going.

Following the Rules…

We don’t have many rules on the dock, but there is one rule that applies to the pet owners.

All dogs must be on a leash.

Our neighbor dog, Schooner, likes to take matters into his own hands…or should I say paws…when it comes to following the rules. He’s quite the independent.

Weekend Favorites

On Saturday, Matt and I stopped in at Hammock Wine and Cheese on A1A and picked up these adorable cans of champagne as a gift for my cousin’s 21st birthday. Sofia mini canned champagnes are packaged in a pink can and completed with a pink straw. Nothing says girl more than these do!

Originating from the Francis Ford Coppola winery, this champagne was named after his daughter, the talented director, Sofia Coppola. This gift is one of my absolute favorite things from the weekend.

Another favorite is my new Essie nail polish in “Cute As a Button” from J. Crew. A perfect way to start off spring!

Pina Coladas

I’m thinking it’s about time for a pina colada! Matt makes the best pina coladas. So much so, that whenever our neighbors hear the blender they flock down to our boat to fill their cups!

Whip out some creme de coco, ice, pina colada mix and the blender and we’re in business!

Inspiration Books

As much as I love reading my Vogue, Coastal Living and Caribbean Travel and Life, with so little space on the boat it’s not practical for me to keep magazines once I’ve looked through them a couple of times. That’s why I make what I call my “inspiration” books.

I tear out any articles, recipes, pictures, etc. that I like and I tape them in to notebooks with black pages. That way I’m able to save that inspiring article, beautiful photo or delicious looking recipe without filling up our spare space with piles of magazines.

Anytime I need a little inspiration for writing, painting or photography I look through my inspiration books and come up with new ideas from the images I’ve collected.

Growing Green

The dockmasters at the marina have decided that it would be a perfect time for a new addition. A garden!

My mom gave me some seeds, a pair of gloves and a spade for my birthday and I bought these cute, flowery rainboots and now I’m set to go gardening!

Be ready to see some flowers and vegetables in the near future!

The Kraken

I’m so excited to have just received my new notebook from Kraken Rum in the mail!

Kraken Rum has a great online store that features the kraken, a legendary sea monster that supposedly dwelt in the waters off the coasts of Norway and Iceland.

Perhaps it is bad luck to have a notebook of a kraken on board since they reportedly attacked ships but I figure that I’ll take my chances and if a kraken does happen to come along I’ll have my notebook so I can document the whole experience of seeing one in real life!

Treasures from New Orleans

My mom and dad recently went to New Orleans, which means they made their usual stop at Drago’s for some oysters and to Cafe Du Monde for beignets and coffee.

So when my mom came to visit for my birthday, I wasn’t surprised that one of my gifts was a treasure from New Orleans.

I love to make lists. To-do lists, grocery lists, wish lists, you name it. So I was thrilled when I opened one of my gifts to find a beautifully crafted note pad designed by New Orleans native, Alexa Pulitzer.

Pulitzer has utilized her experience in textiles and paper printing to create lovely paper goods that reflect her New Orleans background. Her stationary and notepads feature everything from alligators and fleur-de-lis to grey heron and Louisiana’s state bird, the pelican.

The notepad that I received from my mom has a chandelier design printed on recycled paper. Perfect for all of my lists while supporting a New Orleans artist as well!

I know where I’ll be getting my next stationery from!

The Spice Necklace

I’m currently reading….

The Spice Necklace by: Ann Vanderhoof

The key to a good book for me is attention to details without making the story boring. Ann Vanderhoof has a talent for describing things in a way that is both fascinating and enjoyable.  Her informative yet lighthearted writing allows you to possibly learn something new while enjoying her tales of food and adventure in other countries.

Vanderhoof’s first book, An Embarrassment of Mangoes, was a huge hit and she follows it up with The Spice Necklace, which intertwines the joy of food and travel while sailing aboard her sailboat, Receta. Being from the South, I thoroughly appreciate a good meal so I love how she  includes recipes for the foods she talks about in her book. I also am amazed by her ability to make such wonderful meals while on board. Living on a boat, myself, I can say that cooking on board can often be a juggling act but if you have a system down you can work miracles in a small space!

I began reading this book while I was in Eleuthera and while there I came up with a new goal…perhaps one day I will meet Ms. Vanderhoof while sailing and I will invite her to come to dinner in hopes that she might tell me some stories of her travels and teach me how to cook some of these wonderful recipes!

When A Sailor Meets His Match…

It is well known throughout the dock that our Scottish neighbor, Dave, thrives on telling “wee” stories and jumps upon any opportunity to tell them.

However, it is also well known throughout the dock that Sadie, the four-year old little girl that lives two boats down from Dave, is a big talker as well. Sadie enjoys being a princess, calling out for her unicorn fleet, making up songs and riding her trusty pony, Pegasus, at a whim and will always make sure to include the nearest passerby in the fun.

The other day, Dave was working on his outboard engine when Sadie came up and wanted to help…because of course with her magical powers she can fix anything.

I find it funny when two people, worlds apart in age and reason meet and interact. So I believe this picture explains it all.

The cultured sailor fascinated and speechless (or perhaps because he couldn’t get a word in edge-wise) by the bright-eyed princess.

Just another day on the dock….
