Wrightsville Beach. North Carolina

We’ve had quite the adventure so far in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

On Tuesday, we walked for several miles to catch the Wave, the public transportation system for Wilmington and the surrounding areas. While I don’t know what “wave” stands for or if it even stands for anything, the bus was clean and air-conditioned and only cost $1.50 for each ride. We ran some errands around Wilmington and bought groceries. As we were walking the several miles back to the anchorage, carrying our heavy load of groceries,  it began to pour down rain…and when I say “pour down”, I mean it looked like I had just gone for a swim fully-clothed with several bags of groceries. I have to be honest about the situation…I was not exactly the happiest of campers, but it’s all a part of the adventure!

The Hydrangeas Liked The Rain

The anchorage here in Wrightsville has its pros and cons. The proximity of the beach from the anchorage is definitely a pro. The anchorage is about 100 yards from the beach. We dinghy over to the free (another pro) dinghy docks and walk to the beach every day.  Another pro is the town itself.  All the people, here, have friendly, relaxed attitudes. I would say that the only con is the fact that the anchorage is not a “no wake” zone. So the boat is constantly bouncing around from the wakes of the boats passing through the anchorage. Most of the time it’s a boat full of 13 year-olds (literally…there are so many kids driving  around at all hours of the day and night) in their parents’ boats trying to impress their friends by how fast they can go. Other than the wake problem, this town is great. Lots of families wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, surfing and kayaking. It’s so nice to see people so active out on the water.

Scenes from Wrightsville Beach

Wednesday morning, we woke up early and headed to the beach. Matt had an early morning surf session, while I walked on the beach. After a couple hours, we headed back to the boat for breakfast. I laid out on deck and read my book.

The Epitome of Summer Reading

Around lunch, we headed in to town to visit Sweetwater Surf Shop. As we were leaving the beach that morning, we had struck up a conversation with a fellow surfer named Tony, a joyful and friendly guy, who you can just tell is having a great time in life. After talking to him for a bit, he told us that he was one of the owners of Sweetwater and invited us to stop by and check out the shop. Sweetwater Surf Shop is great, they have everything you could possibly need from surfboards and longboards to sunglasses and swimsuits. Matt bought some Suncure, here, to repair his shortboard, which had been damaged during our passage off-shore.

Surf’s Up in Wrightsville Beach

Once Matt was able to repair his short board, we headed out in the dinghy to check out Masonboro Island. Accessible only by boat, this island would be a perfect place to camp or just find some solitude from all the crowded beaches on the mainland. While Matt surfed, I found a new, little friend that happened my way on the beach. He was quite cute but alas, I couldn’t keep him. Before we left the island, I decided to make an attempt at working on my surfing skills. My attempt wasn’t a failure but also wasn’t much of a success. At least, I was able to stay on the board, which is progress in my book any day!

After hanging out in the sun all day, we decided to stop in at Lagerhead’s Tavern for a drink. I really liked this bar, when microbrews are $2.50 each and you’re surrounded by fun, welcoming people, you’re bound to have a great time! More adventures to come in Wrightsville Beach!

South Carolina to North Carolina

Slow and easy couple of days spent sailing up the ICW (Intracoastal Waterway).  I’ve been spending much of my time reading, napping, pulling in the jib and helping to steer the boat.

On Saturday, we spotted some boaters, who were petting a dolphin! I guess they had been fishing and the dolphin decided that he was hungry so he popped up to see what there was to eat. The boaters were feeding him some bait fish and the dolphin, in turn, was letting them pet him!

We saw a deer along the waterside on Sunday. This was a highlight for me, as fawns are my favorite animal. I asked Matt if I could swim over and grab him and keep him on the boat as a pet. He didn’t think the little deer would like to live on a boat, but wouldn’t it be wonderful if he did!

Monday morning was somewhat overcast, so I made hot tea for breakfast. Books and hot tea are a perfect solution to a gloomy day!

We arrived in North Carolina and made our way up to Wrightsville Beach, a small little surfing town on the coast. Along the way, we went past lots of fishermen and people along the shore searching for clams.

We made it to Wrightsville Beach with enough time to go to the beach and check out the waves. I’m excited to see what kind of adventures will emerge during our stay here!

Charleston Continued

Another day spent walking around Charleston. Our friend, Adrian, left today to go back home to St. Augustine. We had a great time with him and are looking forward to seeing him in the Fall.

The Piccolo Spoleto Festival, an arts festival celebrating theatre, dance, music, literature and visual arts, has been going on, so we walked to Marion Square to look at some of the artwork that was being displayed. An artist by the name of Victoria Platt Ellis had some incredible mixed media artwork. She takes sailing charts and incorporates them in with her oil paintings to create truly unique pieces. Her artwork was by far my favorite.

Around lunch time, we found an incredible deli on Cannon Street called Dell’z Deli. I was so happy to have found it because after all that walking, I was hungry! Dell’z uses fresh ingrediants like homemade hummus, sprouts, cucumber, jalapenos and field greens to create delicious salads, wraps, tacos and pizzas. This vegan, vegetarian and meat-lover deli is the place to go when you want something fresh and light! It’s small though (a bar, where you order, with 3 stools), so I would definitely recommend getting a to-go order. Matt and I split “The Hummer”, a wrap with black bean hummus, cilantro, salsa, tomatoes, sprouts, cucumbers, avocado, field greens, drizzled with lime and added turkey to our order. It was delicious!

After another long day of walking, we spent the rest of the day hanging out on the boat and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

Charleston. South Carolina

Today was a glorious day spent walking around Charleston. While the city provides free transportation to its residents and visitors via a trolley system, we decided that we needed to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful, sunny weather. We walked around the College of Charleston’s campus, down King Street, around Marion Square, down by the market and waterfront. We even went past Mary Street and Elizabeth Street.

I love the old homes  in Charleston with their intricate architectural details. There is something so wonderful about a Southern home with a big spacious porch and Charleston has plenty of these. I also really enjoyed relaxing in the Charleston Waterfront Park with its lush, green grass, where children spent the afternoon playing  in the fountains while the adults lounged around under the shade of a palm in the afternoon sun. There’s nothing more refreshing than coming home from a long walk after exploring a city!

The Voyage To Charleston

We motor-sailed up the ICW towards Charleston from Beaufort today. It was a quiet day, so I spent the majority of my time finishing up my first book on the trip, Irene Nemirovsky’s All Our Worldly Goods. Irene Nemirovsky is my favorite author hands down. I have read all of her works that have been published thus far and have loved every one of them.

Besides reading for most of the day, other highlights included an alligator crossing our path, listening to The Lumineers, arriving in Charleston in time to see the Wednesday night sailing race and drinking some champagne that was a going away gift from our friends, Josh and Makayla.

The Lumineers, an incredible band!

Coming in from the Wednesday night sail race.

After being on the boat all day, Matt, Adrian and I stopped in at Salty Mike’s, a bar at the Charleston City Marina, to have a cocktail. There, we befriended a really nice yacht captain named, Scott, who was from Miami. He was kind enough to invite us back to the yacht he was chartering to have a drink and share some stories of chartering for the rich and famous. Always a fun night when you make new friends!

Let The Sailing Begin

After 157 miles of sailing offshore, we have arrived at our first destination, Beaufort, South Carolina.

Favorite Off Shore Song : Florence + The Machine “Never Let Me Go”….Incredible to listen to off shore during a full moon!

Off-shore Necessities: Binoculars, Charts and Perrier Lime

We got this fortune from a fortune cookie a couple nights before we left. Ironic?

Cannes Film Festival

It’s that time of year again….

Blue water. Suntans. Beautiful People. Screenings. Red Carpet. Palm Trees. Champagne.

During the month of May, there is no better place to be than the Cannes Film Festival.

Stellers Art Gallery. Ponte Vedra Beach

Matt and I spent a great evening in Ponte Vedra last night at Stellers Art Gallery. The gallery was featuring the works of Laura Lacambra Shubert and they were absolutely lovely. Every painting was gorgeous with the lighting perfectly portrayed and the subject matter always something pleasing to the eye. I need to learn how to paint like this…
